CURSA DELS NASSOS, BEST RACE IN THE WORLD 2023

Barcelona's cursa dels Nassos, best female race in the world according to the World Athletics ranking.

Barcelona is once again among the elite of international athletics. World Athletics, the highest body of this sport and formerly called International Association of Athletics Federations, has just released the ranking of the best races in the world in 2023 and, in the women's category, the first classified has been the Cursa dels Nassos de Barcelona.

This traditional competition, which celebrated its 25th edition last December 31 with all 11,000 bibs sold, has counted during the last years with great international stars who take its 5 km race to the highest level.

Thus, in the last edition, the Kenyan athlete Beatrice Chebet broke the world record for that distance in the women's race, with a time of 14 minutes and 13 seconds. Along her, the following three runners also managed to beat the previous best time: Ejgayehu Taye Haylu (14:21), Lilian Kasait (14:26) and Joy Cheptoyek (14:28).

"This recognition from World Athletics ratifies our desire to make Barcelona an example of a city that is committed to women's sport, not only getting the best athletes in the world to beat records in our races, but also promoting and increasing female participation in all the races organized by the City Council in recent years," said the Councilor for Sports of the City of Barcelona, David Escudé.

Cursa dels Nassos, a circuit to set records.

The World Athletics ranking places behind the Cursa dels Nassos the World Road Championships in Riga, in second place, and the Valencia Half Marathon, in third place.

La Cursa dels Nassos de Barcelona is one of the most popular races and one of the most important at international level. Barcelona has worked edition after edition to offer a very fast urban circuit, with all the technical requirements so all participants can run their fastest possible times, especially with the creation in 2020 of the International 5K Race where the best times have been achieved in the last years.

This 25th edition has once again been a success, both in participation and in sportsmanship and times. In previous editions also other world records had already been broken, as in 2021, when the female and male 5K mixed race marks were beaten (Ejgayehu Taye with 14:19 and Berihu Aregawi with 12:50).
